Birri in 2006

"Lebanon's parliament speaker, a seemingly unshakeable ally of the powerful Shiite Hezbollah, drew pleasure from Israel's deadly raids on the militant group in 2006, a leaked US diplomatic cable said."  I am not sure how accurate this headline and accompanying piece is, although it has been circulated widely by Hariri media offices.  Far from defending Birri (a notorious wheeler-dealer), the text of the Wikileak in question is rather contradictory, if you read it.  On the one hand it talks about Birri condemning to the ambassador the ferocity of Israeli attacks, and on the other hand it talks about him relishing the attacks.  (thanks Alain)
