Subhi Hadidi wrote an article in Al-Quds Al-`Arabi today in which he claimed that Edward Said would have sided with the Syrian "revolution", had he been alive. I think that this argument about the views of a dead man toward current events is unethical and futile. How if we agree that the living should speak on behalf of the living, and the dead should be left alone: only their work (and the interpretation of their work) can speak for them. But I can't for the life of me imagine Edward Said on the same side with March 14, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the US. But this conversation should end out of respect for the dead.
