Haykal and His Documents: Whether in his writings (before his retirement), or in his Al-Jazeera's program (after his retirement), Muhammad Hasanayn Haykal never refers to a source as a newspaper, or book, or magazine. Every reference and every source for Haykal is a "document". A published book, a newspaper, a magazine, is always for him a "document" (wathiqah), perhaps to impress his viewers. He once wrote a very long article about a "document that will soon be on the desk of President George W. Bush." You know what it was? A published book put out by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy in DC. And why does Haykal, who lived in Egypt all his life, use so many English words when talking in Arabic to Arab viewers. I mean, I lived in the US for 22 years and I do not find the need to use English words to Arab viewers. I am told that if you visit Haykal at his home, the servent comes regularly with a silver tray to bring Haykal "a document" printed from the internet.
