But Anne: what definition of mainstream are you using?  By the mainstream definition of mainstream that I know, it would be unfair to refer to Free Syrian Army as "mainstream" in the Syrian "revolution". Islamists rebels are in fact the "mainstream" while no one even now speaks about the Free Syrian Army.  Now we know, that Free Syrian Army was a mere media invention that it did not last, and to speak about it in 2014 is sheer fantasy of policy of makers in DC.
