The US attitude toward Palestinian free elections

Amaney A. Jamal in her book Of Empires and Citizens: Pro-American Democracy or No Democracy at All?: “Here we have the case of the United States overturning a true democratic experiment.  By all accounts, the Palestinian elections were the most democratic the Arab world had ever seen.  In fact, the elections marks the first democratic regime change  in the Arab world since World War II.  After urging the Palestinians to be more democratic, a prerequisite to continue peace negotiations, the United States and the international community negated the elections’ outcome, declared Hamas an enemy, and then proceeded to penalize the entire Palestinian population for its democratic experiment”.
