Here, the New York Times casually refers to the practice by the armed gangs of the Free Syrian Army to hide among civilians:  "hide among the population".  If this was about armed groups resisting Israel, it would have triggered headlines of recriminations and HRW's reports about a war crime by those groups.  But when the gangs of Free Syrian Army do it, it is mentioned casually in a long article.
