Abbas Milani

I have written extensively in Arabic about the phenomenon of the "Former Leftist": those who previously were leftists and who later join the most rightwing and reactionary of causes, and use their knowledge of the Left to denounce their former comrades and their causes. Abbas Milani (at Hoover: the most logical refuge for former leftists) is a good example of the Former Leftist. Too bad for the right wing cause though: Milani is not--how shall I put it delicately--"very effective." Here, he tells the New Republic (and he selects the New Republic because its hostiltiy to Muslims and their sufferings made it the...logical place for Milani's musings on Iran) that he is basically a hero--read the last paragraph. What do you say about somebody who used to admire Marx and then decided to admire George W. Bush?
