I received several complaints when I referred to the leftist demonstrations in support of Gaza in Lebanon. I made a judgment about the role of the People's Democratic Party solely on the basis of TV images. That was too impressionable on my part. I received this letter from the youths' arm of the Lebanese Communist Party (I cite with their permission): "This is an official email from the "Union of Lebanese Democratic Youth" to clarify and discuss some comments you made about the solidarity actions with Gaza in Lebanon. It is important to say that this is the first time since several years that a wide variety of leftist organizations, groups, and individuals work together aside from the political divisions within Lebanon and also within their parties. (Check article by Khaled Saghiyi ) But it is also important to clarify that in all actions including the demonstration in Awkar, the main leading actor was not the "Popular Democratic Party" which we respect and cooperate with. We don't want to claim any exaggerations, but you can check that "PDP" did not take action in moving the barb wires, and that all the injured people where from ULDY. It is also important to say that we organized/co-organized/participated in the 4 demonstrations at the Egyptian Embassy, 2 demonstration in Awkar, 1 demonstration at the European Commission, 1 demonstration at the Canadian Embassy after its vote in the Human Rights Council, 1 popular solidarity event in Aley, 1 popular solidarity event in Sour, 1 international solidarity meeting in Beirut with 6 foreign orgs, 1 common statement distributed in 8 Arab countries simultaneously, and the open sit-in near ESCWA for 24 full days and nights. If you've only seen comrade Nazih Hamzi on TV, then you only saw TV twice during the whole 24 days. If you watched NewTV or read Akhbar or Assafir, then you would have seen us 24 times. Jazeera, LBC, Manar, Annahar and others have covered us much more than twice. In all cases, we can let comrade Nazih Hamzi be the referee on that issue and ask him personally who was moving all of those actions. With no offense to "PDP", we should also mention that ULDY, LCP, PFLP, DFLP, and People's movement were the most active orgs and parties in all what happened in Lebanon however small it is. In all cases, we fight for Gaza and Palestine and we won't care who do you see on the ground, the most important thing is that many people saw it. We hope that this organized common struggle will be the crane to lift the Lebanese left again and put it in its correct resisting secular democratic position. (and Mr Khaled Saghiyi got it as we meant it)
with all respect"
