I received many angry emails from people mad at the ADC (American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee) for inviting Prince Al-Walid Bin Talal to serve as the keynote speaker at their annual convention. I never was a fan of the ADC--or of any Arab or Muslim organization in the US; early when I came to the US, I did not understand why such an organization (ADC) would NOT criticize the rampant discrimination and persecution that prevail in every single Arab country. It is easy for such an organization to criticize Israel--and they should--but you do not attain credibility or moral fortitude by being silent about Arab discrimination if you want to be true to the name of the organization. So I had an argument with one of their leaders early on, and on another time I had a fight with one sanctioned book displayer at its convention who was selling the trashy Protocols of the Elders of Zion. I protested to the guy, and demanded--I know, I am presumptuous--that he removes the Protocols. He did not; and I called on the president former Sen. James Abourizk who--to his credit--supported my demand and had the trash removed from the premises. And a few years ago I had a rather loud (on his part) argument with their "media director." But then this? A member of the House of Saud on "fighting discrimination"? This is like having Bush address a peace convention, or Rumsfeld address Amnesty convention, or me addressing a Royal families' convention, or Mubarak addressing a popularity convention, etc. What does that mean? Who are they serving? But I am glad that now there are alternative organizations that do not want the ADC to monopolize representation of Arab Americans. Yet, Arab and Muslim American organizations are now busy praising the movie Kingdom of Potato. They want a sequel. They want it NOW. (thanks Hadeel for sending the first alert message)
