It pays to defect from the left: east and west

It always pays to join the right from the left.  Always.  I have seen this happen in the East and in the West.  There are so many rewards to leave the left and join the camp of the right (as much as there are rewards to leave the Asad regime and join the Qatari and Saudi causes these days although there have been many takers as of late).  Take Abbas Milani: he was a leftist who earned his PhD from the University of Hawai at Manatoa when he was a Marxist.  He subsequently taught in a local school in the Bay Area.  As soon as he declared his abandonment of the left and his identification with the right, and as soon as he started singing the praises for the American empire, he was awarded a position at Hoover Institution at Stanford University.  Think about it: "elite universities" rarely accept on their faculty graduates of universities from "non-prestigious" schools.  The only exceptions that I know of is the case of  Fouad Ajami (his PhD is from University of Washington, Seattle) and the case of Milani.

PS Of course, I don't believe in the hierarchy of power and prestige of universities but i am pointing out that mentality of those schools and how they are able to bend their own rules for political reasons.
