Charles Pellat

Now of course, despite my praise for Charles Pellat's life-long work on Jahiz, he was not free of the prejudice and hostility that characterized the work of many Orientalists.  Even in his monumental book on Jahiz "Le milieu basrien et la formation de Jahiz" (it is really a book on the cultural, religious, and literary environment in which Jahiz lived and wrote), he said in the introduction "A reader is generally bored from reading the Arabic [heritage] works no matter how attractive the title and subjects may appear".
