It is high time that we retire the Ibn Khaldun's `Asabiyyah theory about Arab society. It has over-extended its usefulness, centuries ago. This has been a key element in Orientalist theorization about the Arab world and it is time that it be subjected to critical interrogation. And the name Ibn Khaldun is used to merely add weight to the theorization about Arab exceptionalism of backwardness. I mean, there is no `Asabiyyah in non-Arab societies? If the proverb "Me and my brother against my cousin, and me and my cousin against the stranger" is the most abused and overused proverb in writings on the Arab world, `Asabiyyah is the most used and abused "theory" about Arab society. Enough already.
