How Israeli universities work

"I couldn’t support myself and my family. For six years I had no job, until − with the intervention of President Ezer Weizman − I was hired at Ben-Gurion University in 1997."  Can you imagine an American president intervening to secure a job for a professor? It would be seen as scandalous and corrupting.
