A German reader who does not want to be identified sent me this:
"I've been a daily and quite an appreciative reader of your blog for quite a time now.
But apparently, I still can be shocked by the stupidity of certain people out there, especially those governing the country I happen to be a citizen of. I've never been a particular friend of Merkel, but this time, her government does make feel more than sick.
It has been known for more than a year now that the German government had sold tanks to the Saudis (needless to say that knowing of it does not make the actual deal any better). But it is new that Merkel's pet and German Minister of Defence, Thomas de Maizière, publicly defends this. Apparently, the "Bundessicherheitsrat" (Council of National Security) is debatting "whether or not, and if so, to what extent, the export of weapons can positively contribute to stability in the region". I'm not kiding. Members of this council are Merkel herself and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Justice, Finance and Economy, and maybe some other boneheads.
