Defections in the Syrian regime

The highest defection from the Syrian regime since 1970, was Rif`at Al-Asad, who was vice-president.  He also was one of the worst war criminals of the regime, having been in charge of the Hamah massacre.  Not every defector is a hero: Husayn Kamal was the highest defector from Saddam's regime.  Even Himmler established contacts with the allies in the last months of WWII.
