What is the evidence? The evidence is "reports"

"The expanded Iranian role in the conflict has been underscored by reports, supported by US intelligence findings, that an Iranian operative was recently wounded while working with Syrian security forces inside the country."  Is it possible that we can learn something about the "reports" and their origins?  Can you imagine an article about an Israeli war in which a key element of the story is attributed to "reports"? I swear that Congress would have investigated and held hearings.
