So after more than 2000 Syrians killed, Obama figured that Bashshar should "step down." It is not that American stances are not helpful or effective: worse. They even lend legitimacy to the propaganda claims of the regime. Arabs saw first hand the nature of US military intervention "in the Arab spring": the debacle of Libya shattered the illusions even of the most optimistic among the few friends that America has in the Middle East. Dumb and useless American pronouncements can only serve regime's interests in claiming that all the uprisings in the Arab world are due to an international "conspiracy against Syria."
