Long history of Israel?

"a surprising turnaround for a country with a long history of dependence on foreign energy in a largely hostile region."  What long history?  Palestine was occupied in 1948, damn it.  From a historical perspective, this occupation entity will regarded as a footnote, with a shelf life shorter than crusaders' kingdoms.
