China and the Middle East
"Another stunning example of China’s Mideast diplomatic policy came on the 27th of December, 2008 when Foreign Ministry spokesperson Qin Gang stated, “China is deeply concerned over the escalated conflict in the Gaza Strip. We strongly urge relevant parties to stop military actions and armed conflicts immediately so as to avoid more civilian casualties, and take concrete measures to relieve humanitarian difficulties in Gaza.” On the surface this statement condemned Israel, but in fact it encouraged Israel’s aggression while presenting the appearance of fairness. China expressed concern and criticism, but since the statement did not name either Israel or Palestine, the statement appeared to be aimed at both. Why hasn’t the Chinese government issued a direct condemnation of Israel?" (thanks Tanweer)
