Robert Worth on March 14

Robert Worth defines the March 14 camp in Lebanon: "a secular and pro-American political alliance." I mean, how in accurate is that label? Of course, neither of the two sides in Lebanon are secular: Hizbullah is sectarian, Hariri Inc is sectarian, the Phalanges is sectarian, Lebanese Forces are sectarian, `Awn's movement is sectarian, etc. But this statement is rather comical. The Lebanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, Al-Jama`ah Al-Islamiyyah, is part of March 14. So has Robert Worth now declared the Muslim Brotherhood a secular organization? The Salafite movement in Tripoli (with all its branches) is supporting March 14 and Khalid Dahir (a Bin Ladenite Salafi) is running on the list of the Hariri. What definition of secular is he talking about? Has he made the Maronite Patriarch and the Phalanges Party secular too? Wahhabi Salafite in Lebanon are also part of March 14, are they secular by Robert Worth's definition too? The Hariri movement thrives and was premised since its inception on sectarian agitation and mobilization. In fact, when president Ilyas Hrawi proposed an optional civil secular personal status laws, it was Hariri who vetoed it and who mobilized all sectarian forces in Lebanon agasint the civil marriage laws. The deposed sectarian Muftitititi of Tyre, `Ali Al-Amin, is also part of March 14: and the man used to allegedly issue fatwawawas for kidnapping and killing of Westerners in the 1980s, is that secular too? The little outfit called "Islamic resistance" which was created by Prince Muqrin (head of Saudi foreign intelligence service) is also part of March 14, is that secular too, o Robert Worth? Now of course, Robert Worth may have used different criteria from ones used in social sicence to defeine what is secular? Usually, US foreign policy makers define secular as "the tendency to support the American plan for the Middle East region." Thus, Mubarak regime and Saudi Arabia and the King of Jordan are all referred to as "secular." The Fath movement was only referred to as "secular" when Muhammad Dahlan was imposed in its leadership.
