Book burning has been flourishing in Egypt as of late. First, Mabuli Bookshop (and publisher) decided to discard (burn?) two recent books it published by Nawal Sa`dawi (and I am not a fan of her and think much of her writings are rather sexist, essentialist, classist, and they cater to Orientalist expectations). And then, Al-Azhar (the official house of book burning) decided to confiscate a book by the liberal writer, Jamal Al-Banna, on the subject of women in Islam. Yet, as long as Husni Mubarak fulfills his role in the strangulation of Gaza, the U.S., E.U., and UN will be pleased.
