I have been watching Al-Manar TV on the internet (it is not available on satellite here in the US anymore ) in the last two days. I must confess that they are playing it low key--not the usual bombast of official Arab propaganda. And the Arab people remember: not only the bombast of Nasserist and Ba`thist propaganda, but also the bombast of `Arafat. `Arafat lied in the first statement ever released by the `Asifah forces (which he wrote himself), and could not stop lying to the last day of his life, when he was sending millions to Suhar `Arafat. (My mother does not like it when I critize `Arafat, but Oslo did a lot of harm to Palestinian struggle). But Al-Manar TV suffers from the same problem that KPFA stations suffer from in the US: they always have people who agree with them and with one another on the air. `Imad Marmal's show is the exception. Don't get me wrong: they sometimes have people from the left, but usually on specific topics on which they agree with Hizbullah (like Palestine, US foreign policy, etc). I don't like their nationalistic songs, although the clearly have played up the Lebanese nationalist component. (Angry Arab has an aversion to Lebanese natoinalism from any side). Now, they have a right-wing Lebanese nationalist, Elie Mahfuz, on. I could not believe my ears. Mahfuz (a Maronite from `Indaqt) a life-long opponent of Hizbullah sounded like a Hizbullah enthusiast. Mark my words: Lebanese politics will change more fundamentally when the dust settles.
