Converting to Islam or converting to Wahhabi fanaticism?

When Malcolm X, as he tells the story in his autobiography, became disenchanted with the corruption of Nation of Islam and when he discovered that the mainstream Islam in the Arab world was quite different from the messages of Nation of Islam he basically converted again to "mainstream" Islam--if there is such a thing.  At the time, Nasser's regime remodeled Al-Azhar and dare to fight the fanatical Wahhabi interpretation of Islam which was spread by the Saudi regime.  It was possible at the time for mosques in the West to follow the enlightened and progressive interpretations of Islam which were prevalent at Al-Azhar. When Sadat took over, he basically ended the reign of progressive Islam and allowed Saudi Arabia and the Muslim Brotherhood to surrender the Islam of Al-Azhar to the Wahhabi clerics.  There is no establishment progressive Islam permitted in the Arab world by order from Saudi Arabia.  Progressive clerics are either coopted or fought and marginalized.  Yet, Western governments rely on the Saudi regime to counter Jihadi messages with "moderation"--kid you not.
