Incitement and Outside Agitators

From James: "Regarding “incitement”: I think the Jim Crow analogy is important for Americans trying to understand the Occupation. In the 1960s and continuing to the present, there is a constant chorus of complaint about how “outside agitators” came to Mississippi, etc., and “stirred up our happy darkies.” Here’s Mayor Dorrough of Ruleville, Mississippi:

“We don’t expect any trouble here in Ruleville, and we’re not goin’ to stand for any bein’ brought in. These outsiders and agitators aren’t wanted here by anybody. Our Nigras are good people. We know them and they know us. There’s nothing these beatnik kids can give them. They’re happy folks, and they shore as hell don’t want any trouble with the whites who they’re goin’ to have to get along with after these students go home. What are they doin’ down here, anyway? Freedom Schools? Why, hell, we’re spendin’ more money on Nira education in Sunflower County than on the white schools. Voter registration? Why, we’ve had Nigras voting in Ruleville for thirty-five years! The good Nigras who’ve voted all these years are fine people and we respect ‘em. They know that these outside agitators are just stirring up trouble.”"
