Let's not delude ourselves, the occupation of Somalia by Kenya, Uganda, and Burundi is just another extension of Western/American neo-imperialism. They don't want to spend the money and man power to do it themselves, so they subcontract it out to two-bit regimes. Before AMISOM, the West tried Ethiopia and before that they were directly arming and funding various warlords (which they're still doing). And people wonder why groups like Al-Shaabab exist or attract recruits. Maybe your Yemeni student should have asked why America is so intent in murderously meddling in the rest of the world, let alone the Muslim one.
