The Background of ISIS, according to Western correspondents

You know the cliche story of how the Syrian uprising "turned" violent in the accounts of ALL American correspondents in the Middle East. According to the fictional account, Syrians were demonstrating peacefully when the regime started shooting at protesters and then all of a sudden the protesters turned violent, in justification.  So by that account, the ISIS fighters were formerly peaceful protesters who would have championed liberal democracy had the regime not shoot at them? How does that square, please?
