New York Times maintains that Maliki is "widely reviled" in Iraq when he just won a huge victory in a free election

"Although Mr. Maliki is widely reviled in Iraq".  In fact, the Times and the Post even published articles in the wake of the elections analyzing the popularity of Maliki. But when the US decided he has to go, he became "widely reviled" among Iraqis.
