How Al-Qa`idah variants could have eliminated early on

I have been thinking: when the US, Gulf regimes and Pakistan were forming the fanatical Jihadi international army to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan, communists and socialists from around the world should have formed a counter-communist international army to fend off the medieval invasion of fanaticism.   Just as leftists formed an international army of volunteers during the Spanish Civil War.
