Anne Barnard on the murder of the Dutch Jesuit priest

Anne Barnard is more jealous of the reputation of the Syrian rebels than the Syrian rebels themselves. She starts the article by grudgingly admitting the obvious that the the rebels were behind the killing, and she cited a Syrian opposition source:  "“The death of the priest is a scandal for the rebels,” said Mahmoud Taha, an antigovernment activist in Talbiseh, a village near Homs where the Jesuits run a center for the elderly. Mr. Taha speculated that the local Homs fighters had become radicalized. “They no longer accept anyone but those who are like them,” he said." But that does not satisfy her so she sprinkles the whole article with unsubstantiated innuendos and hints to blame the government (although the priest in question was clearly close to the perspective of the regime).  She says he was killed "by a lone gunman".  If the priest was someone who is siding with the opposition, she would have no qualm in blaming the regime in the headline itself.  She then repeats cheap propaganda claims by the rebels who killed him:  "The Syrian exile opposition coalition said in a statement that Father Frans was protected by rebels, including a guard from the Free Syrian Army who was shot in the chest in the attack."  But that is not enough. Here she seems to justify his murder (and presumably the murder of all Christians in Syria): "But many Christians, seeing Islamist extremists gaining power within the insurgency, have increasingly stuck with the government of President Bashar al-Assad."  So are you saying that he deserved to be killed because the Christians are sympathetic to the regime, Ms. Barnard?  She then throws in a weird sentence for no reason and without any substantiation: "At the same time, figures like Father Frans could be an inconvenience for the government."  Why, Ms. Barnard? You said that because he gave aid regardless of politics? What does that mean?  Ms. Barnard you even grudgingly remembered that even Father Paolo who was siding with the armed opposition was killed by them.  (thanks Electronic Ali)
