This is a big story in Tunisia--huge--and even in the Arab world. Do you notice that stories that are embarrassing to Israel, or stories that defy assumptions of Western governments and media, are not covered in the Western press. None of the major US papers covered this story. Apparently, here is what we know (and some of the information I received from Tunisian comrades): Western embassies pushed for the appointment of Western-based Amal Karboul as Minister. She was not known in Tunisia. Many found the appointment suspicious. Tunisians were able to find out that she had traveled back in 2006 to Israel. Apparently, she had not told the prime minister-designated about that. Furthermore, there was an understanding between him and her after the revelations that she would resign if further information contradicted what she told him. She was forced to resign and she left the country. But the uproar about her continues in Tunisia. She claimed that she went to Israel to "empower" Palestinian youths. She also claimed that the Israeli government mistreated her and let her wait for 4 hours at the airport and that she was mistreated because she was a Muslim. Many were surprised at why she had to say that she was a Muslim.
