I received this from my colleague, Lena Salaymeh, from Berkeley School of Law: "The new edition, scheduled for publication in July 2014, of Lapidus' book is not a shortened version; it's actually been thoroughly revised and includes new sections on law, women, and non-Muslims -- some of which I co-authored. The shortened version, Islamic Societies to the 19th century: a global history, was published in 2012 and is basically the same as the third edition of his A History of Islamic Societies, except that the former text stops at the 19th century and the latter text is up-to-date (as much as possible). Cambridge Press made the decision to publish these two separate texts to accommodate the distinct ways Lapidus' text is used for courses. (Feel free to post this explanation.)"
