Samy sent me this: "Sick
of people making excuses for Aung San Suu Kyi. She is at best being a coward
and playing politics, or at worst is a racist playing politics.
Maung
Zarni, a respected Burmese academic, believes that it is a latter and says she
is advised by chauvinist anti-Islamic racists from within her NLD party.
Despite
all the evidence and reports by human rights organizations about how Muslims
(not just the Rohingya) are being targeted with the help of administrators and
the police (and the racist rhetoric from the those close to President Thein
Sein), all she can bring herself to say is that these same corrupt/racist state
authorities must bring "rule of law" to the country.
In
this op-ed the author states:
"But it is Aung San Suu Kyi's refusal to speak out against the crimes endured by the Rohingya that has provided cover for the
international community's failure to intervene. At the outset of the recent
waves of anti-Muslim violence, Myanmar's icon of freedom and democracy was at
one with the military-backed government in her singular calls for the
restoration of law and order by - it must be noted - the very same state
security forces which so terrorised the entire Myanmar population for five
brutal decades".
Only
positive, you could argue, is that she at least said earlier this year that
implementing a 2 child only policy is wrong:
Despite valorizing her, the BBC did at least address her
being silent a little bit here:"
