How US manages democracy of the Syrian exile opposition

So the US, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia picks a group of Syrians and then give a name to their gathering.  Then the three agree on a choice, and tell the Syrian exile figures to support that person.  Within days, Western and Arab (oil and gas) media carry this headline: a Syrian opposition group "elects" X as a leader.  Long live democracy.
