I (dis)like that in all the phrasing in Western media about US relations and "security interests" in the Middle East there is a dumb but convoluted attempt to disguise the real core of the relationship, i.e. the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. They always list a number of factors only to conclude with the reference to the treaty, as in: the US has many interests in Egypt: security, stability, cotton and cotton candy, Amru Diab, and, oh, there is also the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. Here is the phrasing of the New York Times: "a foundation of the American relationship with Egypt for more than three
decades and is viewed as critical to the region’s stability, not least
as a pillar of the 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel."
