US governemnt and Syrian chemical weapons

Are you following the exchanges at the US Department of State and the White House about chemical weapons in Syria? Basically, the US government says: that the Syrian rebels could not have used chemical weapons and that the regime has used them but that the US government calls for an investigation. But why the investigation?
