In the article about political Islam in the special section about the Arab uprisings in the Economist, I read yesterday a reference to Fitnah and it was defined as "schism". I can't find that reference now: it must have been deleted. Of course, Fitnah has many meanings in Lisan Al-`Arab: from takfir to death to torture to a man having a crush on a women (the association between civil war and physical attractiveness of a woman is quite interesting and warrants an article and Fatima Mernissi says something about that in Beyond the Veil) to sedition to civil war. But none of the meaning is "schism" as was mentioned in the Economist. But I am glad that the erroneous reference was removed (I checked my version here and on my IPhone).
