"As to why the Syrian opposition has proved so stubbornly hard to unite, Indyk, who wrote his PhD dissertation on Syria’s Baath party, said it’s discouraging."  Correct me if I am wrong--never am--but was not his PhD rejected in Australia?  I remember hearing the story from one of the professors there (Robert Springborg).
