The American "revolution" and the Syrian "revolution"

In the American revolution--all mythologies and patriotic narratives aside--the American people were divided into three distinct groups: the Patriots were those who were supportive of the revolution, the Loyalists were those who remained loyal to the crown, and the rest were not sure where they stood or were waiting for the victor to emerge.  And according to the historian, Nathaniel Philbrick, the third group was the largest.  I reckon that the Syrian people today can be compared to the American people at the time of the revolution.
