Obama Doctrine in Egypt: the (American engineered) militar coup that was not: role of Sami `Anan

Mustafa Bakri, the Egyptian journalist who has underwent political transformations in the direction of Saudi Arabia and who has been very close to the military leadership of Egypt, has just released a new book about the last days of Mubarak and the internal deliberations of the military leadership.  In it, he reveals that the Egyptian chief-of-staff, Sami `Anan (who was visiting the US when the uprising erupted) returned to Egypt with the plan to launch a coup, and presumably to abort democratic transformation.  It was Field Marshall Husayn Tantawi who vetoed the plan.
