You should see the footage of Bashshar Al-Asad at Damascus University. Why? Because in the West they still insist that Bashshar has no support whatsoever outside of the `Alawite community, and because they still say that Bashshar is living in a bunker. I have argued for two years that is Bashshar's support is confined to `Alawites he would have fallen within months. The situation is more complicated and he benefits from class situation where many of the upper middle class and upper class Syrians--by no means all--support the regime for obvious and less obvious reasons. What does that mean? It only means that you should disbelieve everything you read about Syria in the Western press, especially when every article has at least a Zionist from WINEP cited as the expert.
PS Saudi media enters the mix. The website of King Fahd's brother-in-law, Al-Arabiyyah, thinks that it stumbled upon a great discovery: it reports the story of Asad at the university but adds that he was surrounded by his bodyguards. Really? How scandalous. Who does that? Not even Saudi princes who are children.
