From Khelil: "Qatar continues to receive its rewards
Qatar
Telecom (Qtel) has raised its stake in mobile operator Tunisiana by 15%, citing
encouraging prospects for an expansion of Tunisiana’s 3G services in the
country.
According
to a press
release from Qtel, the transaction made between Tunisia’s government and
Qatar-based company is worth $360 million. The 15% stake originally belonged to
Sakher El Materi, son-in-law of ousted president Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, before
it was appropriated by the government following the revolution.
Qtel’s
telecommunications subsidiary, Wataniya, had already a direct holding of 75% in
Tunisiana. Thus, the deal, announced on Tuesday, raises the total shareholding
of Qtel and its subsidiary in Tunisiana to 90%."
