Can Western media make up their minds regarding the Syrian Army?

Yesterday, I read in the Washington Post that the Syrian Army is all opposed to Asad and that they are only fighting because Shabbihah are forcing them to fight.  And now this in the Economist:  "A hard core of Mr Assad’s armed forces is still loyal to him..."
