A source sent me this: "Please find attached a detailed report on the incident that took place in
Geitawi/Achrafieh on 7/10/2012- 80 Syrian workers, not refugees, in addition to
Egyptians and Sudanese, were attacked by the mobs of the Lebanese Military
Intelligence in their residences in Geitawi- they were humiliated, beaten up in
a manner only comparable in its severity to the Syrian regime's torture
techniques, and humiliated. Following a question "are there any Tony's here" and
an answer of no, the military intelligence bombarded them with abusive questions
asking "are you with the free syrian army? what are you doing here? why dont you
go back to your country and fight?" beaten up- taken to once particular rooftop
and stretched on the ground with their hands above their heads and stampeded
upon with military boots.
The more outrageous reaction was from media, and press in general: "so
what, a bunch of workers beaten up, this happens all the time." Yes,
unfortunately, it does. But this time I feel the implications are much more
serious- the locality of Geitawi was abused for its ardent support for the Army-
this will cause further problems for workers residing in that neighbourhood,
apart from the traumatizing physical and emotional damage, as neighbourhood now
perceives them as "trouble makers- certainly they are, why would the army
otherwise crack down on them"?
Please find attached the detailed report, and pictures.
This is once again an outrageous account of the Lebanese army's crack down
and violence against marginalized segments of society, no similar crack downs
have been reported, at least in scope, on known residences of Syrian Opposition
Activists- this is a clear message to all, to silence, to terrorize."
