"When talking about "Tawhid Brigade", a rebels unit that, mainly, confronts the Syrian regime in Aleppo, nearly all western media translate the Arabic word Tawhid to Unity (here is an example). I'm not sure whether this is by ignorance or deliberately as part of an effort to hide the Islamist perspectives of the Syrian rebels.
Tawhid in Islam refers to the concept of the oneness of God. In their prayers, Muslims say: There Is No god but Allah, Mohammad is the prophet of Allah.
This sentence, especially the first part, is very common in daily conversations in Syria (and in all over the Arab world) even among the non-Muslims. People usually use it in expressing their restlessness. Nevertheless, the word Tawhid, itself, has a strong Islamic load.
Actually, a better translation of Tawhid is Oneness, or we could simply leave it intact."
