Akram, the Angry Arab's correspondent in Syria, sent me this:
Though the initiative seems immature in terms of its political content, it would be a sign of hope for the Syrians who are heading directly towards a bloody civil war, unless the Syrian regime strangled it in its early beginnings as usual."
"A Syrian group on
Facebook," Proponents and opponents together for an instant ceasefire", invited the Syrians to
participate in a demonstration that it would take place in Damascus on
15th of September. Until this moment, 4700 is the approximate
number of initiative's members.
According to
the initiative's Facebook page, the
demonstration will be "peaceful" and the participants will hold banners calling
on the Syrians to "unite their ranges regardless of their political
affiliation". The initiative called on "the fighters to drop their weapons, the
army to return to its barracks" and "the Istanbul Council to send back home the
Arab Mujahedeen". The initiative's supervisors said that the "red, white and
black flag with the 2 green stars (the official Syrian flag) belongs to all
Syrians; it doesn't represent any single party or regime", adding that one of
the main objectives of the demonstration is to "enforce the dialog between the
two combating parties and initiating early presidential elections under a
neutral international supervision".
Among the
demands of the initiative:
- Releasing all the detainees who haven't committed criminal actions.
- Legislating a law that prohibits arresting and suing people based on their political affiliation.
- Preserving the role of Syria in backing the resistance in Lebanon against the Israeli enemy.
- Prohibiting any external intervention in the Syrian affairs.
Four
coordination committees (local groups of activists opposing the Syrian regime)
operating in Damascus issued a supportive statement.
