So Whitaker has been excitedly peddling a story from Saudi media. Al-Arabiyya site (the site of the news station of King Fahd's brother-in-law) claimed that Bashshar's sister has defected and attributed the story to "pro-Syrian" regime newspapers in Lebanon. Al-Arabiyya has withdrawn the story from its website, as I noticed: but they often do that. They make up a story when the lie is exposed, they simply remove it without explanation. The story was clearly invented because there are simply no daily newspapers that are pro-Syrian regime in Lebanon except the daily of the SSNP.
