New York Times and hostage taking

Look at the headline of this story in the New York Times:  "48 Captives Are Iran ‘Thugs,’ Say Rebels in Syria".  If Israeli civilians are taken hostage by an Arab group, and if the Arab group refers to them as thugs, would the New York Times headline refer to them by the claim of the Arab group?
