So the US appointed Al-Akhdar Al-Ibrahimi as the UN representative on Syria. This cowardly and unimaginative man has been a career opportunist all his life. He was a staunch Arab nationalist during the Arab nationalist era, and then became an obedient servant of the US after the Cold War. This is a man--it should be remembered--who was a tool of George W. Bush in Iraq and Afghanistan. His role in Iraq is yet to be chronicled. He is to ashamed to write about that period.
PS Years ago, Edward Said invited me to attend the AUB ceremony in which he was awarded an honorary doctorate. I attended but when it was time to award Al-Akhdar Al-Ibrahimi, I withdrew immediately, explaining about his role in the region. But the dumb Bashshar government will welcome him with open arms.
