My colleague Andrea sent me this: "Hi As'ad, you may be interested (though not surprised) that a quick look at
the Shamir obituaries in the UK press yields the following result: the
liberal/'left' press covers itself in glory with the Guardian saying he joined
"Lehi [/Irgun], a Jewish movement opposed to British mandatory
authorities" ()
the Independent calls Irgun/Lehi, which bombed the King David Hotel and
assassinated UN and UK representatives, "the most hardline of three
Jewish movements resisting British mandatory authorities" ()
and even the BBC does better by at least mentioning that these 'movements' were
"paramilitary" ().
Compared to this coverage, the right-wing press is a paragon of accuracy and
depth: The Telegraph provides the most in-depth covering and calls him "a
former terrorist who found himself Prime Minister" (),
and the FT also refers to him as a "terrorist" ().
I'll spare you the US coverage, but note that the English Al-Jazeera
website actually completely glosses on Shamir's violent past in Mandatory
Palestine ().
Even Wikipedia has a more accurate account of his armed militancy ( …although
"more accurate" is rather stretching a point…)."
