Irony about Syria

What makes the issue of Syria immediate to me, aside from the proximity to Lebanon, is that in my personal experience, I have--at the risk of sounding patronizing--been quite fond of the Syrian people (and the Sudanese people) that I have met and known.  I feel that they are overall full of charm and wit. (There are exceptions, of course: Bashshar has as much charm as a raccoon).
